2027 Summer Reading Magic Shows in San Diego County: A Guide for Librarians

Planning a summer reading program means booking performers early. Here are answers to the questions librarians ask me most, plus what's new for 2027.
What is the 2027 summer reading theme?
The iREAD 2027 theme is Reading Expands Our Universe, a science fiction and space theme about dreaming big and exploring beyond our world. The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) chose a mystery and detective theme for 2027. Each library system decides which theme to use.
Is there a summer reading magic show built for the 2027 theme?
Yes. My 2027 show, Out-of-This-World Magic, is designed for the iREAD Reading Expands Our Universe theme. Young readers blast off on an interactive magic adventure through the stars, help make the magic happen, and discover that the biggest adventures in the universe start with a book. The show can also be adapted to fit other library themes.
How long should a library program be for young children?
Most library magic shows run 30 to 50 minutes, with 45 minutes the most common length. For toddlers and preschoolers, shorter is often better. I offer two lengths at the same fee:
30 minutes: best for littles, ages 2 through TK
45 minutes: best when older kids are in the audience
Is there a bilingual magician for library shows in San Diego?
Yes. I perform in English, Spanish, or bilingually, and I can switch languages during the show to match the room. That's a big help for libraries serving Spanish-speaking families.
¿Busca un mago bilingüe para su biblioteca? Ofrezco espectáculos en inglés, español o bilingües en todo el condado de San Diego.
What makes a magic show a good fit for summer reading?
The best library shows tie the fun back to books. Mine includes:
A live read-aloud: a picture book story woven into the show
Audience participation: kids help with the magic and join me on stage
A reading message kids remember: every adventure starts with a book
A grand finale: one lucky child floats in the air like an astronaut in outer space
How much does a library magic show cost?
My fee for library programs is $400 for either show length, anywhere in San Diego County, with no travel fee and no limit on attendance.
Who is Amazing Dana?
I'm Dana Law, known to young audiences as Amazing Dana. I've performed family magic for more than 35 years, including summer reading programs at libraries throughout San Diego County, such as Encinitas, Coronado, Lemon Grove, and San Diego Public Library branches.
How do I book a summer reading show?
Most San Diego County libraries book summer performers in the fall and winter, and dates fill quickly. Visit my Library Summer Reading Program page to see details and request a date.
